Benedict Evans of Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (“a16z”) recently published a blog post titled “New Productivity.”
It got us pretty excited.
As Ondema’s positioning and product both mature and come into focus, we learn more about how we’re a part of a massive shift in how software is applied and consumed across value chains.
What is “new productivity” software?
Spreadsheets are awesome. Email’s pretty cool too. So are databases. And file sharing. But each have their limitations either due to complexity or scale. (Related: check out our blog post on when spreadsheets fall short)
Evans defines new productivity as “…companies that remix some combination of lists, tables, charts, tasks, notes, light-weight databases, forms, and some kind of collaboration, chat or information-sharing. All of these things are unbundling and rebundling spreadsheets, email and file shares. Instead of a flat grid of cells, a dumb list of files, and a dumb list of little text files (which is what email really is), we get some kind of richer canvas that mixes all of these together in ways that are native to the web and collaboration.” He provides context around a few interwoven waves of new productivity – unbundling the above, addressing specific verticals, creating two-sided marketplaces, etc.

How does Ondema fit in?
We’re serverless. A serverless web application makes integrating services like collaboration and notification across complex workflows much easier as users’ expectations evolve from atomic tools (e.g,. email that is disconnected from deliverables and schedule) to integrated tools (e.g., email threads connected to specific deliverables and timetables).
We help companies move beyond spreadsheets. The Workspace provides all of the agility of a spreadsheet (e.g., change whatever you want whenever you want) with additional features to allow users to visualize, prioritize, and collaborate in ways that spreadsheets cannot.
We enable agile processes. The Workspace lets users define as many processes as are helpful in keeping track of work-in-progress. Users configure processes themselves, update teams and processes as often as needed, and are confident that everyone is on the same page about what the processes are, and where work is in the process.
We make collaboration easier. By re-bundling some of the best aspects of spreadsheets, email messaging, notifications, account permissions, etc., customers can easily communicate and collaborate across (increasingly) complex value chains, including those outside of an organization. Make sure everyone knows key deliverable timelines. Send messages when it would be helpful to disseminate and track communications. Document signoffs in a single place. Assign work to different people. It's much more than simple office productivity software.
